DOCTORAL PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The ‘Doctor of Philosophy’ (Ph.D) program, intended to prepare the participants for teaching and research positions both within and outside academia. The participants who complete the program successfully are conferred the designation of “ Doctor of Philosophy in Communications, Xavier University Bhubaneswar”. Our Scholars are expected to be specialists in their respective fields and capable of generating new knowledge that contributes to the development of management thinking and practice.

The program draws upon Indian and global experience in doctoral education in management and various related fields. The program is also designed to serve as a venue for nurturing various academic debates concerning research. The program structure includes a significant component of research training, facilitated by both in-house and visiting researchers. Ph.D Scholars are expected to develop deep understanding in the areas of research selected by them. They also get a structured exposure to a range of management topics, develop various professional skills, and participate in the Institute’s academic activities. The Institute supports participation in academic conferences and publication of one’s work in scholarly media.

Our doctoral scholars are expected to be specialists in their respective fields and capable of generating new knowledge and be the great new thinkers for our world. The program draws upon Indian and global experience in doctoral education. The program is also designed to serve as a venue for nurturing various academic debates concerning research across the relevant domains. The program structure includes a significant component of research training, facilitated by both in-house and visiting researchers. Ph.D scholars are expected to develop deep understanding in the areas of research selected by them. They also get a structured exposure to a range of topics, develop various professional skills, and participate in Xavier University, Bhubaneswar’s academic life and activities.

DOCTORAL PROGRAMS

The Doctoral Program is designed to prepare students for professional leadership in the field of management, and commerce. The objective of the Ph.D program is to facilitate research entrepreneurial skills and orientation of doctoral scholars. It is designed to promote the culture of research entrepreneurship wherein researchers are encouraged to explore themselves, ask questions, actively seek peers’ feedback, build conviction broader level Ph.D Program aims at contributing towards Xavier University, Bhubaneswar’s endeavour towards Sustainability, Entrepreneurships and Analytics (SEA) by understanding those issues which are fundamental to the research enquiry, and have a linkage with organizations, institutions, economy, society, and environment.

DOCTORAL PROGRAMS (PART-TIME)

OVERVIEW:

This program has been designed to cater to the scholarly needs of candidates who are in a full-time employment. The program is intended to prepare participants for research and teaching positions both within and outside academia. Our doctoral scholars are expected to be specialists in their respective fields and capable of generating new knowledge and be the great new thinkers for our world.
The scholars are expected to develop deep understanding in the areas of research selected by them. They also get a structured exposure to a range of topics, develop various professional skills, and participate in academic and other activities.

ELIGIBILITY:

Candidates need to satisfy the following criteria to be eligible for admission to the Doctoral Program. For information on the schools please visit the Xavier University, Bhubaneswar homepage https://xub.edu.in .Candidates not meeting the eligibility criteria need not apply to the school in concern.

Pre-qualifications listed in the following table to be satisfied for the select school :

School of Communications

Master’s degree in Communication and Journalism / Visual Communication / Communication / Electronic Media / New media / Fine Arts / Advertising and Public Relations / Broadcast Communication / Film Studies / English language and literature, OR a professional Degree in the stream of communication declared equivalent by the corresponding statuary regulatory body.

In all these cases, the applicants also need to secure at least 55% marks in aggregate in the Master’s (or an equivalent) level. In case this score is available on a letter-grade system or grade-point system, the University expects a minimum equivalent of 55% marks in aggregate as per the awarding University’s norms for conversion to a percentage.

HOW TO APPLY:

Applicants have to fill up the online application form separately for Xavier University, Bhubaneswar programs at: www.xub.edu.in Upon successfully filling the online application form and paying the application processing fee, the applicant will receive the confirmation by email.

SELECTION PROCESS:

Candidates will be shortlisted on the basis of their academic records and SOPs. The shortlisted candidates will be required to appear for Xavier Research Aptitude Test (X-RAT), Subject Test (if applicable), Presentation, and Personal Interview to be held in Bhubaneswar. Details about X-RAT is available separately on our website. The coursework for the selected candidates will commence from June 2020.

X-RAT GUIDELINES :

Xavier Research Aptitude Test (X-RAT) is a test of some basic skills considered essential for researchers, namely writing ability, verbal ability and comprehension, reasoning, and quantitative aptitude.

SUBJECT TEST:

Schools shall be conducting a subject test (for domain candidates only) which the shortlisted candidates may need to appear. Details on the test will be communicated to applicants separately.

CANDIDATE CATEGORIES:

The candidates who will be offered admission into the doctoral program will be classified in two categories:

PROGRAM FEE:

Rupees Three Lakhs in the First Year; and Rupees one lakh in each year from second year onwards. This does not include board and lodge charges while residing on campus. Services taxes as applicable will be extra.

DURATION OF THE PROGRAM:

The Ph.D students are expected to complete the program in 4 years after doctoral registration (please refer to the table below). It may be extended with due approvals.

DOCTORAL COURSEWORK:

The coursework is organized in three phases (Phase-I, Phase-II, Phase-III). The coursework will broadly involve the following courses as given in the table below. Additionally, workshops will be organized as per requirements.

  • COMPREHENSIVE QUALIFYING EXAMINATION:

    The Comprehensive qualifying examination will be conducted after the successful completion of doctoral course work. After successful completion of the comprehensive qualifying examination, the student will be allowed to proceed to the Thesis Phase.

    THESIS PHASE:

    This phase will involve working on the thesis proposal till final submission of thesis. The scholar is conferred the title as given below on successful completion of all the requirements of the thesis.

    Any extension of time beyond the expected completion duration as noted above will be based on review of progress status of the scholars in concern. Students failing to comply with the program requirements will be de-registered. A student has to meet all the requirements of the Doctoral Program according to prescribed standards and no exemption will be granted for any reason whatsoever.

    At the time of applying for admission, a candidate is required to choose his/her School. They should also indicate their preferred area of research from the list provided below; this will however be formalized by the end of the doctoral coursework.
